Theyfoundwomenwhohadweight-losssurgerywere42percentlesslikelytodevelopcancerduringa10-yearstudypublishedinthejournalLancetOncology.
Meninthestudydidnotbenefit,possiblybecausemanycancersaredrivenbyfemalehormonessuchasestrogen,theysaid,orsimplybecausefewermengetweight-losssurgery.

AstudyreleasedonTuesdayintheJournaloftheAmericanMedicalAssociationfoundpeoplewhowereobeseasyoungadultshadtwicetheriskofdevelopingpancreaticcancer,anespeciallyaggressivekind.
Weight-lossoperations--inwhichdoctorschangethedigestivesystem'sanatomytocutthevolumeoffoodapersoncaneat--havebeenshowntoreversediabetesandreducetherisksofdyingfromheartdisease.
TheSwedishstudy,ledbyLarsSjostromofSahlgrenskaUniversityHospitalinGothenburg,compared2,010obesepatientswhohadweight-losssurgerywith2,037obesepatientswhogotstandarddietandexercisetreatment.
Overall,theyfoundthesurgeryhelpedpeoplemaintainanaverageweightlossof19.9kgorabout43poundsover10years.Peopleinthedietandexercisegroupgainedanaverageof1.3kgornearly3poundsduringthestudyperiod.
Thesurgerycuttheratesofcancerbyathird,butwomenenjoyedmostofthatbenefit.Amongwomen,therewere79first-timecancersinthesurgerygroup,and130amongthosewhogotstandardtreatment.
Dr.AndrewRenehanoftheUniversityofManchesterintheUnitedKingdomsaidinacommentarytheabsenceofabenefitinmencouldsimplyreflectthenumberofmenwhowereinthestudy.
Hesaidforwomen,thegreatestcancerpreventioneffectswerelikelytobepost-menopausalbreastandendometrialcancers--cancerssensitivetohormonelevels.
Renehansaidtheeffectsofweight-losssurgerymaytakelongertoshowupinmen,whoaremorepronetocolon,rectalandkidneycancers,whichtakelongertobecomeapparent.
